 Day 1

Checked out of the hostel in Tauranga, said goodbye to the smelly hippies and headed for Whitianga. The drive took about 2 and a half hours in bucketing rain and through mountains and too many bends to remember!! We stopped off at Hot Water Beach which is named due to the fact that at low tide, you can walk out onto the beach and dig a whole and hot water fills the hole. We arrived 4 hours before low tide and it was raining that hard that we half expected to see a guy with a long beard rounding pairs of animals into a big wooden boat!!

We decided to head for Cathederal cove which as up the road instead. the rain eased back a good bit so we parked up the car and made the 45 minute walk to Catederal cove, named because of the Cathederal shaped hole in a rock on the cove, which turned out to be pretty spectacular in spite of the rubbish weather. We stayed there for about 30 minutes and then made the trek back to the car and headed on towards Whitianga, we checked into the hostel, met our German roommates (Te country is full of them!!), cooked dinner and had another early night!!

Day 2

Woke up roasting with the sun beating in the window and the germans next to us complaing about how 'Fucking hot it is in here' in their own hilarious way. Had breakfast and headed for New Chums Beach, which incidentally is ranked one of the top 20 beaches in the world, however its not advertised on any signposts or any maps, the sneaky New Zealanders have kept it a secret, suppose thats why it is so amazing! Anyway, we arrived in the carpark, parked up the car and headed for the beach which was a wee bit of a trek, including a river crossing, climbing over rocks, up a mountain, down steps and we finally arrived...then we understood why the New Zealanders don't want any tourists on the beach on it either!! It was simply amazing, easily the best beach i have ever been on, there were only two other people on the beach as well which was incredible for such an amazing place, it was a real high light of the trip discovering it. We relaxed on the beach for a few hours and found a swing on the beach a swang on it like a pair of kids for a few hours and then made our way back to the car.

We then drove to the town of Coromandel and made our way back to Hot Water as the weather was mighty and we had acquired a shovel to dig a hole to lie in!! The beach was packed and we had trouble finding a place where the hot water came up, there were loads of holes dug in the sand with varying temperatures from 'nice and warm' to 'oh fuck thats hot'!! We eventually got a hole dug, relaxed in it for a while and made our way back to the hostel, cooked dinner, treated the sun burn and hit the bed!!
