Where I stayed
Lois' house
Els House
Lois met us at coffee time and he had another couch surfer from USA with him too. We all chit chatted as we directed our travels to the train. The train took us to Harrlim again (where we stayed our first nights). Lois stays in a student complex (a whole bunch of containers stacked on top of each other). Each container has a small kitchen and bathroom and just enough space for your bed to fit wall to wall down the end. The weights on our back were remove and we soon found ourselves back in Amsterdam central. Our stomachs were feeling deprived so we found an all you can eat Chinese restaurant (mmm all you can eat). This was the first time we had eaten till we were really full in some time. We devoured a couple more mini spring rolls just to get our moneys worth and went for a wonder. Lois showed us a couple streets in the red light district that we hadn’t discovered before. One building you walk through and each room has a girl standing in the door way trying to draw in new customers. We walked down an alley way that was tight fit (you pretty much rubbed bodies with the people going the other way). Later the exploring came to an end and we found ourselves back at the container.
The next morning I slept till what I thought was 8am but ended up being 1pm. The TV turned on and we watched New Zealands first game against the Slovakia. We didn’t have high expectations as New Zealand is the 3rd lowest ranked team in the world cup, so when they tied in the last minute of the game we were amazed. A short walk down the road was the supermarket where you could get 8 ice creams for 1euro (we ate a lot of them over the few days we stayed at lewis’). We also bought chicken and potatoes and cooked up a surprisingly tasty mashed potato with tandori chicken meal which ended up being our lunch and dinner. The next day we didn’t get up to much at all, just kicked backed and recovered from all the stress of being on holiday for 2 months. We spent our last night with Lois because he was off to join the army and we were heading to the west coast.
In the morning we said our goodbyes and ate the last of our ice creams. The plan for the day was to train to Delft where we were to meet up with Joyce who we befriended while in Thailand. She met us at the station and we zoomed off in her car. First we went for a wander around the town. Its got a lot of really old buildings and a big cathedral. It looks a lot like a mini version of Amsterdam with the houses all build one against the other and canals running in between. We then headed to dei haag which is a bigger city quite close and at the beach. The beach has waves crashing on it from the North Sea. The water is a brown colour for some reason. A lot of big ships travel through the North Sea to Rotterdam (further up the cost) which has the biggest shipping container yard in the world. We didn’t swim but there were a ton of people kit surfing (we kept waiting for there kites to tangle but they never did). After the beach we drove to a forest with a lake in it. I headed towards the waters edge when out the corner of my eye I noticed a naked black guy sunbathing and quickly changed direction. We were informed that one side of the lake was for naked people to hang out. We headed back to Delft where Joyce had to look at a house as shes looking at buying. In Holland and I think most of Europe when people move out they take everything. The wall paper was ripped off, lights gone (just wires sticking out the roof), gas lines for the heater gone. Was really ruff looking. It was funny cause the house underneath had weed growing in its garden. The day was getting closer to its end so Joyce dropped us back at the train station where hugs were exchanged and we headed back to Amsterdam.
We met up with a girl (Els) in Haarlim where we were to couch surf for one night. She had her computer hooked up to a big TV which was cool. We played a little guitar hero (Sam is really good at the drums). For our dinner we stuck with chicken, this time satay, but with rice (we really suck at making rice). A nights tale was put on and we fell asleep watching it. In the morning Els took us to the beach (still the north sea but further up the coast). There are a bunch of beach house actually on the beach really close together. We dipped our feet in the ocean which is bloody freezing. With sand on our feet and wind blowing our locks we strolled down the beach. At a café we relaxed with a beer for a while before heading back to Els place. Els accompanied us back into the city where we walked the streets a bit more. Around 9pm we went our separate ways. We headed to the bus stop and waited for our bus to Hamburg in Germany.
