Where I stayed
We arrived in Bangkok at about 8.30pm and temperature 32degrees. We thought it was hot inside the airport until we got outside, then it was hotter!
We bought a sim car for about 4 or 5nzd that lets us call cells and landlines over here for 2c a min (catch up global roaming).
We ended up finding the express bus by asking a few friedly Thai foke. We caught this bus for 10min, which was free and then jumped onto another bus for 50min, costing us 35baht ($1.40). The traffic is crazy, taxis kept pulling in front of the bus and thais doubling on motorbikes with no helmets everywhere
There seem to be stray dogs everywhere, just hanging out. None of them bark or anything and seem really friendly but don't realy wana go pat them just in case. A taxi took us down a couple side streets (more like alleyways) to Tooms (our host) house. His house is pretty cool, four storey place and so far we have met a guy from Eygypt and a guy from England also staying here. Inside the house there were fans blasting out wind but didn't realy make a difference to the heat.
Toom's a really cool guy. We wondered with him down the road to a little street stall where we had our first meal. 30baht (1.40nz) Chicken fried rice with vegatables (realy good). Also some thais were sitting outside singing Thai kareoke really loud, it was funny (this is at about 1am). We were amazed at all these people that stay up all night selling food, I dont know when they sleep. We then walked round the corner to a small shop, a the gas station. Just about everything in the shop costing 10 or 20baht. Got a couple drinks and wondered back to Tooms house.
By this time it was about 2am and still just as hot, we were sweating a whole bunch
Haven't made many plans for today but will see what we get up to.
From the 13th to 15th of April is Songkran (Thai new year) and its pretty much just a giant water fight with thousands and thousands of people. Everyone has water guns, hoses, buckets, pretty much anything that can hold water and soak everyone around them. As well as this a lot of people walk round covering you in this clay stuff. We would get it all over our face and as soon as you whiped it off another passer by would cover you in it, so eventualy you give up trying to stay clean. We got completley drench so many times. People poor buckets of water over you and a lot of the time its freezing cold. You arn't safe from getting wet any where in the city center. A lot of fun. One of the streets we went down was where they had riots, but it was just a water fight now. There were a couple cars smashed up and bullet holes in one building. They had photos of the people that died which was pretty sad.
To get to the festival we caught a boat. Pretty cool, like a bus on water. Has a bunch of stops along the way. Also sam found some deep fried mars bars at this resturant.
Tomorow at 2.30pm we are catching a 15 hour train to Chaing mai, so we can check out whats on show there.
We will return to Bangkok on our way back around.
