I had the opportunity to explore New York City on Sunday, April 10, 2011 when my cousin needed to drop off our relatives at a bus station for their East Coast tour.  We woke early in the a chilly spring morning to avoid the afternoon traffic.  Some have said that New York is a cruel and heartless place, but seeing it with a historian’s pair of eyes NYC is the pounding heart of America.  It is the modern Capital of the World.

One of my favorite journalists, Charles Kuralt of CBS News, wrote that certain kinds of people are drawn to the City when they are young.  New York calls to them if they want to be writers, painters, actors, singers, dancers, or if they want to make careers in advertising, broadcasting, finance, journalism, publishing, or law.  Even if the idea of the Big City frightens them, they have to come, because New York is the place where they can test themselves against the very best!  I took the city and its proximity to Philadelphia for granted.  So I was never into living, studying, or working in the Big Apple.  During graduate school, I did attempt to get an internship at an non-governmental organization there, but my application had been rejected so I ended up in Washington, D.C. at the Foreign Service Institute.

I had an immediate impression of New York as we took the highway curve towards the Holland Tunnel and exposed my eyes to the stately Empire State Building.  She stands there by her lonesome self against the morning sky, undoubtedly missing the Twins.

Everyone misses the Twins.
