Dell is across the street from our offices and Oracle is two buildings down. Motorola is building a huge complex nearby as well. As for the rest, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
What struck me as the most interesting is the interplay between the traditional and the modern. Many of the construction sites use vast amounts of manual labor where we would use back-hoes or Bobcats. On the same site you could see a mix of bamboo scaffolding and western metal scaffolding. Both men and women would work on the construction sites and it was somewhat surprising to see women in Sarees wearing hard hats
Just as in the US, many of the construction sites were forest or farms before development and you could still see a rice paddy or two being farmed between the buildings. In addition, herders might walk goats across the street in the middle of the office complexes.
At dinner one night we got into a discussion regarding the nature of the construction and what it meant for Hyderabad. The image that stuck in my mind was that Hyderabad right now was going through a very "Shivaistic" moment. Shiva is commonly thought of in the West as the Hindu god of destruction. What is less commonly recognized is that he represents the full cycle - birth, death or destruction, and re-birth. A way of life is definitely changing in Hyderabad and the energy in the city is almost tangible. Even though I have been here only a week, I get the sense that the people feel that this is their chance to make it to the big leagues and that they are not going to blow it.
