Kampot is a small town which does not seem to have enough people relative to the number of buildings it has, so it seems like a dusty little ghost town, and for the most part it is.  The main reason travellers come here is to visit Bokor Hill Station, which is exactly what we did.  While planning our trip we caught an episode of Intrepid Journeys featuring this place and since then it had been on my must do list.  Bokor Hill Station was built in the 1920's by the French as a place for them to go and aclimatise and play basically, as it is up in the mountains and has a much cooler climate than at sea leave, which was quite nice I must say, even a little chilly.  They built a hotel and a casino and also a Catholic church, which was later abandoned and then reclaimed by the Khmer Rouge.  The buildings still stand and have a very grand feeling about them even though they are completely run down, it is possible to walk through them and you can almost imagine people in dinner suits and ball gowns floating around the dance floor or sipping cocktails.  It is very airy place, because of the height there is a lot of mist which seems to come and go at will.  One minute the view will be beautiful the next you will hardly be able to see your hand in front of your face.  Even though it was a three hour journey on the back of a pickup truck, up a crappy road that had probably not seen any maintence since the 20's it was well worth it.  On the note did you know you can fit 24 people on and in a pickup truck?  Originally we were on two but one broke down so lets jsut say we had to get friendly!  We must have looked funny because once we got back into town lots of people laughed at us!
