We arrived in Chennai a bit disorientated as we lost our lonely planet and had no idea where to go. Typical Indian experiences greeted us at the very earliest point of arrival but we didn't really pick up on it. By this we mean a half constructed customs check point, with the typical 'no problems' attitude that the Indian people and only the Indian people can pull off!!! We met an auto rickshaw (India's name for the tuk tuk) as soon as we walked out of the airport. Thankfully the driver, who showed us where an ATM was, took us to a reasonable hotel/guesthouse stopping at a book store on the way so we could replace our freshly purchased and lost lonely planet - gutted. This country is going to be a fascinating place and we can see why it is so polarizing, either love or hate, India leaves nothing in between. We spent little time in Chennai, but had the following interesting moments:
1. Seeing a man beat the living crap out of a woman, presumably his wife, with a piece of 2 X 2 with no one interfering or batting an eye lid.
2. Getting to drive an Auto rickshaw.
3. Doing donuts in the Auto rickshaw, getting it up on 2 wheels.
4. Eating some of arguably the world's best food.
5. Trying to avoid beggars and getting run over.
All in all it was a great introduction and a good place to start this country in!!!
