After a rainy day looking around Santiago, we took a bus to Porto in Portugal, where we stayed in the Pensao Grande Oceano, a central, family-run hotel, for 30 euros. Porto is a picturesque, hilly city, probably an overlooked city in an overlooked country. As a Portuguese woman commented to us, One time we were active all over the world, now nobody knows us.
We made a day trip by train to Guimaraes, considered the birthplace of the Portuguese nation and a UNESCO heritage site, with a ruined castle and a palace that is worth visiting. We went on to Braga by bus, also an interesting town, where we ate in a Mozambican restaurant.
