Where I stayed
We headed to Hervey Bay where we had arranged to work for board for two weeks at The Friendly Hostel run by Gary, a South African. We took the overnight bus which arrived at 5.45 am and were delighted to find a McDonalds open which we sat in whilst we waited for Gary to pick us up at 9am. Desperately hoping for sleep, unfortunately we hit the ground running and worked that morning from 10 until midday and then after a much needed snooze, we wondered around town.
Hervey Bay isn't the most lively place in the world so we took the opportunity to just chill out, read books and sit on the beach. Gary was great and the work wasn’t too taxing and we enjoyed quite often having our shared apartment to ourselves every now and then. Very sadly I also watched lots of TV and became a fan of Australia’s Amazing Race, Dancing With The Stars and Downton Abbey!
Due to financial constraints we decided not to visit Fraser Island for which Hervey Bay is the jumping off point and will visit when we’re next in Oz with hopefully more money and slightly better weather. Out of interest, we think Rainbow Bay is the new, better point from which to visit the island.
