Today was a big blessing visiting the children at the Casa Hogar de la Ninos Christian Orphanage in Acapulco. We left the Grand Mayan early in the morning for a stop by Walmart to pick up goodies for the kids. It was about a 40 minute crazy taxi ride to the orphanage.

We didn't have any idea of what to expect. Today is the Cinco de Mayo holiday for the kids so they were home from school. Many of the 55 kids (6-16ish) were playing in the humble courtyard when we arrived with balls, art supplies, bubbles, books, candy, and games to play with them.

We passed out the goodies and the boys, Chris, and I started playing with them. The language barrier was somewhat of a challenge, but I soon saw a blond haired gal among all the dark brown haired kids. Mandy was an American missionary from Baltimore on a one year internship. Between her and Aaron, another young man from Washington, D.C., they were terrific interpreters and great with the kids.

Chris, Keegan, and Collin played dodge ball, football, soccer with the kids. I was playing Jenga, trying to read the spanish book to Marcos, and throwing a football with some of the girls (they loved it)! The kids loved the art supplies the most. So many of the kids sat around in a circle on the ground coloring with markers and crayons, drawing pictures, and creating art.(see photo)

We left them with a surprise pizza party...a big treat for them we're told.

They all have a sad family story or they wouldn't be there. I was amazed at how well behaved, sweet, polite, and thankful they all were. If you'd like to share in blessing them...here's the contact info. They can use art supplies: play dough, clay, finger paint, markers, drawing/construction paper, scissors, etc. You can also sponsor one of the kids monthly and send them a new outfit for their birthday, treating the orphanage to a pizza party ($150ish), or spend a week at the orphanage on the construction team.
