We got going early this morning. Kelly and Keegan got on a bus to do another tour. Kelly and I thought we would give the boys some one on one time and Collin has a hard time with the long tours.(me too) So Collin and I had breakfast at El Tovar and then worked on some of the exercises in his Ranger book.(ie;looking for certain rocks, animals, plants...) We even threw the football for a while. We had a great time! We met up with Kelly and Keegan for lunch after their tour.

In addition to the beauty of the Grand Canyon, we learned there are a few animals worth watching. We were told before we got off the train to look out for the squirrels. What ever you do "don't feed them." They get something like 35 people who are bit by squirrels every summer while trying to feed them. They are incredibly aggressive. Once they learned this, the boys decided they were deputy rangers. Every time they saw someone feeding the squirrels, they would go inform them of the risks. Some teenagers from Germany were, you guessed it, feeding the squirrels. Collin tried to warn them. But, they learned the hard way. One girl was pretty shaken up when one bit her.

Another animal you here a lot about is the amazing California Condor. These birds, which were almost extinct in the 80's, can now be seen flying above the Grand Canyon.(if you are lucky you'll see one) With a wing span of about 10ft, they are hard to miss. Before we left, the boys listened to a talk by one of the rangers about the Condor.(see pic) The picture you will see, I think, best sums up our motivation for our travels. The boys have been so blessed to be schooled outside the classroom, but this is amazing!

After the talk, we had to run to catch our train.(see pic) The 2 hour ride, again, went by quickly. The boys met some kids from Austrailia and barely noticed when 2 outlaws boarded the train and held us up!!

We got back around 6:00pm and picked Riley up at the Kennel. Hving been the first time she was away from us, she did pretty well. After a little counseling, I think she will be able to forgive us.

Aggressive Squirrels!
Hey Guys,

Laughed when I read about K & C warning the folks about feeding the animals... what a riot! Am guessing that Kelly found them Deputy Ranger badges to make them official!

Sounds like you all are having a terrific time. Photos look really neat. The hamburger place in Jerome appears the type to have really large greasy burgers that are usually the best in the world. Let me know what you ordered.

Any sightings of scorpions or rattlesnakes?

Safe travels!
