One of the highlights to traveling the Cassiar Highway - beyond the beauty of the area - is a visit to Stewart, BC & Hyder, Alaska. Hyder is home to the USFS Fish Creek Bear Viewing Platform - an opportunity to, hopefully, see bears 'fishing'.

Travel from BC to Alaska requires one to pass through customs, yet again.  The US side does not have a station and in fact there is only a customs station coming into Canada from the Hyder side. According to a local we spoke to this is directly related to the fact that Canadians would come to Hyder to purchase large quantities of cigarettes.  Before the customs station was erected there was no one to prevent this from happening. ( and no one to collect the taxes...)   The station that was erected was actually blown up by a disgruntled citizen - no one is sure from which country.  The second station, only open part time, was disabled by placing a large tree across the roadway to prevent entry into the U.S. from Canada.  Finally, the third station, was put in place and is staffed 24/7!

We would travel between the two countries several times a day - taking in the sights along with watching the bears.  It got to be kind of funny as the Customs officials began to recognize us!  We did see bears. Above and beyond that we took a very scenic drive, in ever changing weather conditions, up to Salmon Glacier - truly a high light for all of us!
