Our time in Nuevo Casas Grande has come to an end and we are off to the Copper Canyon.  The distance between these two stops is too far to comfortably make in one day so we chose to make a two day pit stop in Cuauhtemoc.  This city of roughly 150,000 is located in the state of Chihuahua which is Mexico's largest state.

This area contains a large Mennonite community.  The Mennonite movement can be traced back to Europe.  In the 16th century the Mennonites left Holland and settled in Germany.  They would go on to move to Russia and than on to Canda before arriving in Mexico in 1922.  The Mennonites settled here so that they could practice their religion, run their schools ( children only attend school until the age of 12 ) and live a peaceful life.  This is a large farming community and if you didn't know any better you would probably think you were in Nebraska or Kansas.

We spent a very enjoyable day here visiting the Mennonite Museum as well as the downtown area.  This area doesn't get very many 'gringo turistas' and we definately received alot of attention from the locals as we wandered around the Zocalo.  Ken's only regret is that we didn't have more time for shopping downtown, he is positive that he missed out on some good deals!
