The plan today was to take a scenic drive along the north shore of Lake Superior.  We would stop when something caught our eye and turn around when it was time to head home.  All and all, a very casual plan for a couple of people who are normally pretty organized.

I actually have to make a confession about my sometimes border line obsessive planning and this may surprise some of you.  I'm trying to turn over a new leaf.  But, first a little background information on that comment!

Back when the only time off we got was on vacation we were pretty planned out.  We had things to do and places to be and time off was way to precious for us to waste a single moment.  Needless to say that vacations were fun and a great break but alot of planning went into getting the most out of them - most of you will probably understand & agree with me on that.

So, now it's March of 2005 and we've gotten rid of it all and have hit the road 'fulltime'  in our motorhome.  I was still doing a lot of planning and had routes & reservations made months ahead of time. I still wanted to squeeze as much out of our precious time as possible.  One of the biggest adjustments for me, probably the biggest one actually, was being able to relax about making plans. It's taken me awhile but I think I am finally there.

Well, we've been on the road now for four and a half years...can you believe it??  And we have reservations, only because when we called they told us it would be a good idea, for the campground we are headed to on Wednesday.  After that we have a vague idea of where we are headed but that may change.  The only real commitment we have is a rally in Amarillo in October followed by a rally in Tucson.

That brings us back to todays sight seeing excursion.  Yes, I still do  a bit of research on the areas we are staying in so that we can be sure to hit the highlites.  That research is what led me to 'discover' the North Shore Scenic Route, also known as highway 61.  I don't think I will ever really be able to to just wing it when it comes to a sightseeing jaunt, I don't want to miss anything after all!!  So we  headed out today with a map, a direction of travel and a vague idea of what there was to see along the way.

It was a fabulous, relaxed day with some stunning scenery and a couple of great hikes along the way.  I've included some pictures so that you can enjoy our day along with us.  As always, we are amazed by the diversity of this countries scenery and can't wait to see what awaits us along the next turn in the road!

Ken here. Ann forgot to mention one little item. We ended the day back at Duluth's  canal park at a local Italian restaurant. Dinner was great and we also (in violation of my rule) had a great wine (it was half-off on Monday). It was a Zinfandel named XYZinfandel from the Geyserburg CA, one of our favorite locations in CA. Made us homesick for a little wine tasting. Fed and stuffed, $70 poorer we headed home for some much needed elastic. Hah, and you all thought I was cheap.
