We are still in South Dakota.  Today we went to the Crazy Horse Memorial.  It's not finished yet even though they started in 1948!  But we saw a movie that explained why.  The Federal government is not paying for any of it - 100% of the cost for creating it come from private donations and the museum proceeds.  It is huge!!  All of Mount Rushmore can fit into the head alone of Crazy Horse,  When it's done, it will be the largest statue on the planet.

Crazy Horse was a famous Oglala Sioux leader who fought at Little Bighorn.  He died on September 6 and the sculptor who was commissioned to create the statue was born on this same date, so the Indians thought it was a good omen for him to be the one to sculpt it.  His name was Korczak Ziolkowski (don't ask me how to pronounce that!) and he was born in Boston. He was actually an assistant to the guy who created Mount Rushmore so he knew what to do.  He died before his dream was realized, of course, but he had 10 kids and most of them are still working on the sculpture today,  He was adamant that the Crazy Horse memorial be funded only from people wanting to donate; he even turned down $10 million from the US government!  I wonder if he had taken the money if it would be finished by now.  There was a cool museum of Native American artifacts and a cool gift shop.  We got some sweetgrass.

Then we drove through Custer National Park.  We were looking for wildlife and we saw some but not a lot.  But we did see a group of donkeys just hanging out at a Bison lookout!  They must have been wild.  They just stood there and some people were feeding them grass.  They were cute.

We're going to an old Western town called Deadwood tonight.

 update:  Deadwood was quite lame.

Mama on

This is my favorite blog post so far, because it has lots of donkey pictures. I hope you remembered how much your mama loves donkeys and are bringing me back a few. Sounds like another fun day -- can't wait to hear about tomorrow!
