By Kate.

After days, weeks, months of planning, worrying, excitement, and stress, we finally saved enough money to take us out of the country again. This monetary gain also conveniently corresponded with some amazing opportunities in Costa Rica, which will be our final destination.

In the days leading up to our departure, we had some outstanding fun with friends and family. We shared Labor Day weekend with some of our longest and best friends camping in Asheville, we spent 3 days in the Outer Banks with the Pink family and 3 days in New Bern with the Chandlers. It all seemed to go by so fast! We got to see one friend get married and two days before we left, we had our last night out with Raleigh friends which was great fun and very memorable.

Our last night was spent at the Pink household in Cary (we flew out of RDU). We filled the house with happiness and reminisced over the last 10 months we spent in the U.S. Giving away all of our things was freeing, but scary at the same time. What if we had to come back for some reason? What would we have? What if our business ventures in Costa Rica don’t work out? What will we do then? There are so many risks involved in our lifestyle… many traditional thinkers would never think of doing what we are doing, and may even protest to us doing it. There are no guarantees… only possibilities. Although so many of our friends and family are intrigued, this is not the path they would choose. They think we are crazy for taking this road, but they want us to do it. I appreciate that so much. In a sea of unsupportive, disbelieving, and culture-centric people, I am glad our friends and family are the opposite, that they believe in us, that they love us and encourage us. They are the best and most important part of our journey.

With their love in our hearts and minds, we got on the plane the next day. Our spirits were high, even though our hearts were a bit heavy at leaving. Little did we know, we were about to spend 24 hours of hell in airports and in and out of planes. We arrived at RDU around 7:30am (Click on the pic for the video). Check-in (did not pay for bags!), security, gate… 2 hours to wait. FREE WIFI! We depart RDU on Jetblue at approximately 9:40am and arrived in FLL at 11:30am (we felt like we were already in South America because we were surrounded by Spanish!). Baggage claim, wait 2 hours to change airlines to Avianca (check in counter not open), check-in (did not pay for bags!), security, gate… 3 hours to wait. FREE WIFI! We depart FLL at approximately 5:40pm and arrive in Bogota, Columbia at 9:20pm. Security, let the drug dogs sniff our bags, gate, wait. FREE WIFI! We depart Bogota at approximately 10:50pm (9:50pm Bogota time) and arrive in Santiago at 4:45am the next morning. FINALLY! After no sleep, but surprisingly a lot of airplane food, drinks, and snacks, we are HERE! The dream… finding ourselves… the adventure… begins!
