Hi everyone,
Our rental car excursion did not turn out as planned. The rental car company were obviously working on Borneo time which meant they did not show up at 9am with the car, nor did they turn up at 10am...The resort came up with a solution, they would give us the resort car for the day. It all sounded great until we saw the car, at least 20 years old, no air-conditioning( which is a necessity not a luxury here) and the mileage clock stopped at 180,000 which meant it had about 500,000 miles on it. Anyway onwards and upwards, another adventure we decided to go with it and take it up the mountains!
Firstly we drove north of the city to a luxury resort called the Rasa Ria for a nosey around then we started the two hour drive to Mount Kinabalu National park, up very steep and winding roads. Think every truck, tractor etc overtook us but we finally made it! Scenery on the way was spectacular, have attached loads of photos. Stayed in the park for a visit to the botanical gardens and a walk around. The park is really only worth a visit if you are going to climb the mountain. Paul is hoping to return some day to do the climb. We were anxious to leave before dark to make sure the car got down the hill.
Off to Sandakan tomorrow to see the orangutans, going to spend the whole day on Saturday in the sanctuary...

Ge ou a dat garden!
The photos bring it all back. The beauty and the pain! My legs still ache now thinking of all those steps! Looks like you got a wee taste. Even the short stroll to the gates takes a bit of work. You both look like you enjoyed it though. Maybe next time we'll all go up the mountain together. Looking forward to the Sepilok entry.

ps. interesting fact about Borneo - only place outside Limerick where people still hunt human heads !!

cannot believe you were at the rasa ria, that is where we stayed last year, pretty nice apart from the plague of sandflies.
Have a great time with the oran-utangs

Hi
Hi,
Well sounds like your having a fab time ,hope you enjoyed the orangutan scantury. I spent the weekend hiking around the aran islands with the ucd mountaineering club, don't worry, i haven't gone mad the only reason i agreed to go was because there are no mountains on the aran islands!, was great fun though.
