In just under 3 weeks we will fly out of Melbourne to Bangkok on our way to India and then Nepal...this is the first entry of our travelogue and why we decided on this trip as part of our Long Service Leave.
The dream started 5 years ago when we were sitting on the balcony of the "Halfway House", a guest house in Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan,China.
This farmhouse turned guest house when the clever farmer decided that he may as well make money from the many trekkers who had constantly knocked at his door asking for a bed for the night when they found they had either underestimated the weather or the length of the gorge walk.

And so it was on this day in November 2001... we had stopped for the night and found ourselves sitting on a small balcony with the most amazing panoramic view we had ever seen in our life - the biggest gorge in the world and it was spread our completely in front us, so close that I felt I could reach out and touch the other side.

During the course of the day, trekkers of all ages and all nationalities walked into the farm and all were amazed as they walked through to the little concrete balcony and found the panoramic view before them. We sat and listened to everyone's stories of where they had just come from and where they were next headed

It was when the discussion commenced amongst this widely traveled group as to the most beautiful place they had seen that the seeds for our future plans were started.....as here we were sitting in the most indescribably, spectacular, amazing... add a few dozen more adjectives.... view (and I must also add a view which was impossible to capture on film) and the discussions were all about Nepal! Yes, everyone on the balcony that night were amazed and enthralled by the view in front of them, but the ones that had been to Nepal said they felt that nothing could every match the beauty of that country.

...... I sat there and thought "I've just got to see this place with such beauty as to be more impressive than the vista before us.....next stage convincing Rob that we really could trek the Annapurna in our 50's (and live to tell the tale). ... and then the plan began...
