After waking up from the nap in the car, the ladies were ready to get out of their winter clothes. They were moist from the southern humidy but found it far more enjoyable than the northern rain. They traveled on the narrow and windy Blue Ridge Parkway Rd. Thelma drove very slow so Louise would not get carsick.
Bathing suits were put on at the top of the Parkway and the clerk at the small convience store answered questions on the area.... at first he did not seem to interested in playing 20 questions with Louis( Louise's husband and him have this in common). Finally he loosened up and provided information about the area and Slide Rock - which is were two have been headed since Monday.
Upon arriving at Slide Rock, the gate was locked and the park was closed. The ladies knew after Labor Day the park is no longer staffed with lifeguards however the area does not close for winter for another month, The 2 were about to become rogue tourists and break in to the park. They saw some hardworking construction men working behind the gate and approached them for permission to enter which they received. After parking illeagally and climbing over the gate they were off for the rock. They had been warned the water was cold - and they were not lying. Louise wnated to change her mind a few feet from the pool, but no amount of screaming or clawing was going so stop her from sliding down. She would have gladly taken assistance from a lifeguard had a muscular one been present as she was certain her joints were going to freeze. Thelma also was shocked by the cold water and felt as if the breath had been sucked from her again a lifeguard would have been helpful. Suits were adjusted back to their appropiate places on the body before getting out of the water - the ladies are tourists not exhibitionists.
From here they mosied on down to Looking Glass Waterfall and then out of the park.
Blue Ridge Parkway is in the Pigsah National Forest. Slide Rock is 12 miles from Brevard, NC
