Having arrived at Lasithi plateau, it was time to chill out and catch up with the family. Stellios had returned from uni, Artemis from securing accommodation for the start of her tertiary studies and Joseph and Lizzie were holding court. Rachel and Yannis have not changed in my memory and the house is as I remember it. There have been some great additions like the interior to the stairwell, the upstairs finished off, painted and looking sharp, and the garden outside  has been transformed to a green landscape with an irrigated lawn, the apple & pear trees and a large oven where the cat's sand pit used to be and  tractor where the motorbike was previously garaged. Jean, Mandy & Tom were also in good form and the regular mealtimes and chats around the bbq table are easy to take.

Of course Yannis still has to come and go, off to various work projects, and Stellios had his day at the cave, ferrying clients up the hill on his donkey. So we pottered about, went for walks filling in time until the next meal extravaganza.

Sleeping at the taverna was challenging - the first night, we put it down to getting used to the noises of the plateau. But the second night, with dogs barking, donkeys braying , cockerels cockadoodledoing and the church bells ringing it became a little tedious, and the nanny nap again made an appearance occasionally. Night number three wasn't an issue though because we had worked our way into the way of the plateau, with fatigue demanding us to bed and sleep arriving soon after.

But now, we are in Stalida, the Everest Apartments, down by the coast about 30 km from Heraklion.

The place has a fantastic view (hence the name) and is nicely out of the way of the maddening crowd below and in Malia. With its own pool, and very comfortable units with balconies overlooking the coastline, the nook and crannies provided, tempered by a cool afternoon sea breeze allows for all to find a pleasant place to escape, or not as the need arises, catering for every wish. Backgammon, mah-jongg and a few beers by the pool, half days at the beach, walks up the hill to inspect the view, or entertaining Joseph in the pool have become the preferred activities to quietly while away the time.

Who knows what tomorrow may bring -  a ride at the local horse stables, a swim to the island off shore, the glass bottomed boat, a trip to Chrissos - all have been mentioned, but the mood of the moment is easy and unpredictable - just as it should be.

It looks and sounds idyllic.
Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday in Birmingham. Sally, you may need the pink mac - we're currently being battered by the tail end of Hurricane Katia! xx
