Day trip from Xela

Flag of Guatemala  , Quetzaltenango,
Monday, September 19, 2011

The travelling posse (minus Dee who needed some me-time) headed off with a collectivo (aka mini-van taxi) to Xela's main station, and then caught another collectivo to reach the small town of San Martin Chile Verde. They wandered through the crazy market to find another collectivo that would drop them at the foot of Volcan Chicabal.

You see, to get to Laguna Chicabal you have to climb this dormant volcano up to the crater. The lake is sacred to the Mayan people who refer to the ever-present fog covering as a "mystical cloud forest".

No surprise then that when they arrived it was cloudy. They decided to push onwards and upwards along the steep path nonetheless. Mario realised just how unfit he was and found new resolve to remedy that for next time. They finally made it to the top after an hour or so but it was totally overcast. They couldn't see the lake at all. They just had to believe that it was really there!

The journey downhill was a lot quicker and easier. Manuela found a guy on the road with a pick-up truck and asked if he'd give them a lift back to Xela. He agreed to at a reasonable price so they all hopped in the back and covered up.

All in all, it was a good day with good buddies and good exercise!
