The problem with booking a flight is that it sets a deadline in an otherwise deadline-free life. As a result we are due to board a flight in Fort Lauderdale bound for Guatemala City in 2 weeks. We got a good deal on Spirit Airlines, a no-frills company that mainly flies into Central America.

We could have easily spent more time in the States though. We have been thoroughly enjoying our time here.  There's just so much to see and do in this huge country, it's like visiting Europe. Each state is big enough to be another country, and each has a different feel and sub-culture. That's how 3 weeks in California turned into 2 months going from coast to coast!

But, and it's a big butt (!), all things considered it's good that we're leaving now. Even though the States is marginally less expensive than New Zealand (food, alcohol and petrol) it's nowhere near as cheap as it gets south of the border.

What about Mexico? I hear you ask. You recall correctly that our initial plan was to head there to explore and learn Spanish. That way when we venture into the rest of Central and South America we'd have a richer cultural experience being able to talk to people and read newspapers. But word on The Road Lees Travelled is that Guatemala is the better country to learn Spanish. Apparently they use less slang, the language is more generic, the accent more neutral, and it's cheaper!

What has this got to do with West Palm Beach? Nothing really. Except insight into our movements. We also have this crazy plan to somehow explore key spots in Florida and work our way to New Orleans in our remaining 2 weeks. More on that later...

So to quickly get ourselves over the east coast we booked another cheap flight, this time with American Airlines to West Palm Beach. But we never got to see this town (the Rough Guide says we're not missing much). We heard about a cool hostel in the Everglades that we were determined to experience so as soon as we landed we trekked our way there.... with public transport... 2 trains...multiple lightning storms... 1 crowded bus... 6 hours later... we finally arrived... and realised... we had been travelling...that day... for a total of... 17 HOURS!

Sometimes when you're travelling on a budget and you have all the time in the world, it happens!
