Remember Bo, the Danish guy we met in San Diego? What I didn't mention is that we arranged to meet up again in LA to get a rental car together and cruise up to San Fran along the coastal road known locally as the PCH, Pacific Coast Highway.

Road trip! Road trip! It simply had to be done! It's the reason the U.S. is so huge, or is it the other way around? Both the train and the bus take the less scenic but quicker route and this way we had more flexibility to stop when and where we wanted.

First stop: 5 metres after entering the highway
Second stop: another 5 metres on and so on...

Such was the nature of the traffic leaving LA on this Saturday afternoon in the heart of summer, summer, summertime. Eish! Perhaps not the best time to set off but you live and learn. It meant we got to take in the sights better and cruise along the beach,"leaning to the side but you can't speed through, two miles an hour so everybody sees you".

Now if only we were "riding around in a jeep or a benzos". But a glorified bum's "salary" split 3 ways got us a Dodge. Looks Dodge to me! It was actually a lot better than expected. The great thing about Americans and their supersized cars (aside from the supersized roads) is that when you pay for a "compact" car it's actually average sized to the rest of the world. Dee was the designated driver given previous experience of driving in the US, albeit 12 years ago.

The real first stop: Malibu for lunch at the seaside chain restaurant called Duke's. Overpriced but tasty burgers, we didn't mind paying for the view and holiday atmosphere. Valet parking? You want me to hand over the keys? Sounds Dodge to me! Now where's that guy going with my car? Now lets hope we will recognise it when/if he comes back with it.
