Flag of New Zealand  , South Island,
Thursday, May 26, 2011

The highlight of Golden Bay for us was undoubtedly visiting the Farewell Spit, a 22.5km long and
1.5km wide (at its base) strip of sand dune. It's at the top of the South Island and reaches out like a claw towards the North Island. Apparently it's a haven for a range of birds but a death trap for whales who are caught by surprise and swim right up onto it. Doh!
