The way everyone raves about Golden Bay we thought it was the name of a town, not just the name of a bay. You know like how Hout Bay is the name of the bay AND the town? All we knew is that we "should go there", but where exactly on the bay "there" is we were not sure! Before we could get there we had to cross the infamous Takaka Hill, apparently one of the most feared roads in NZ. We survived the journey despite the worst possible conditions - pitch darkness as there are no streets lights and rain coming down in torrents. And we had to endure 25 windy kilometres of that. Hair-raising, I tell you!

The towns that make up the bay were all charming, that is, when we finally got to see them. At first we were stuck in Takaka because there is only one road around Golden Bay and it was totally flooded and half washed away after the heavy rain.

The hippy hangout called Mussell Inn at Onekaka (too easy!) is worth a visit even if only to try their homemade beers. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that it was Dub-step night at Roots bar, the only happening venue in town. A good night of head-bobbing. There we met our first fellow Saffa traveller - late twenties, female, who was using Wanaka as her base to work and travel around NZ. Everyone keeps telling us that there's so many Saffas in NZ. Well, where are they hiding? I guess most of them live here rather than travel about.
