Hot springs always amuse me. They seem to attract a mostly geriatric crowd seeking that elusive fountain of youth. I blame that darned eighties movie, Cocoon. Yes, I'm old too!
It was appropriate then that our backpackers was called "Le Gite" - the Resting Place. Note the conspicuous absence of the word "final". Definitely not a spot for tweenies then. In fact it was more of a B&B than a backpackers. This is another common phenomenon we've noticed around NZ - motels, hotels and B&Bs have started tagging the word "backpackers" to the end of their signage as an after-thought to try and move with the times and attract this growing market. I guess it's deemed synonymous with cheap.
Anyway...
We have hot pools back home too so we're no strangers to them. Montagu Springs is very much a Cape Coloured institution but Hanmer Springs is different. They have lots of different pools, some with different temperatures, others with different water sensations with over- and under-water sprays. It was a great way to rest our weary, aging bones after hiking up the Chatterton River track where honeydew from native beech trees quenched our thirst.
There's not much else going on in town in the between season. I'm sure it was buzzing in summer and will be again in the ski season (apparently it's late this year). But if you're stopping by be sure to feast on a Kiwi burger at the Log Cabin...wow! We're talking large beef pattie, bacon, egg, pineapple, cheese AND of course, it wouldn't be real Kiwi without beetroot!
