At Hokitika we came across and followed the road signposted to Lake Kaniere that led us 16km inland. The locals pronounce it "canary" but we didn't spot any. An awesome spot. So peaceful and so chilled.

Having overdosed on socialising in a house full of people, we opted for a day of silence. The experiment only lasted 4 hours. We had to get really creative to communicate without words. It started off as fun but in the end, out of frustration, we decided that we were missing out on sharing thoughts and laughs. Won't be doing that again in a hurry!

Both nights we chatted to Steve, a local long-term freedom camper who gave us all sorts of tips like the best places to camp, great lookouts and plentiful fishing holes.

To enhance our chances of catching something legal and edible, we invested in a new lure. Black with gold stripes and a red tail. The hunting/fishing shop bloke reckons it's the most popular one amongst our fellow fishermen and the preferred fake food of lake trout and salmon. Steve concurred. So now we can no longer blame the tools.

That night... we ate meat.
