We've never been to Auckland before but somehow it all feels strangely familiar(?). The weather, the vegetation, the landscape. It feels, and indeed looks, a lot like our hometown. As our airport shuttle bus cruised along we couldn't help but liken each suburb to its Capetonian twin. It's like all the best bits of Cape Town have been condensed into a smaller space, and all the social issues (resulting from the history) of my beloved country have been extracted. So it's not hard to see why so many Saffas have immigrated here. It's also great for us visitors because it means we can pick up Niknaks and boerewors at the local supermarkets!

Once in downtown Auckland we got ourselves somewhat orientated with the lay of the land. It wasn't that hard since everything seems to radiate from one street that ends with a ferry port. We bought a local sim card so we could make contact with Sue and Rob. Their wedding was the following Saturday hence the reason for us needing to be in NZ at a specified time. We arranged for Sue and her mom, Dot, to meet us at the waterfront (yes, very Cape Town!) and then we drove to her home in Glen **. It was here that we spent quality time getting to know both the Keightley and Wills families: Sue's dad - Laurie, Rob's parents, John and Janet, and Rob's brother (and bestman), Chris. All very warm and personable folk who made us feel right at home!

To celebrate John's "44th" birthday we made our way down the hill that night to an Austrian (no, that's not a misspelling!) restaurant where we feasted on oversized schnitzels. Mine was a Jagerschnitzel though sadly it was missing the Jagermeister! Both Rob's parents were very ill late last year, and Rob left the UK earlier than planned to help out. So it was very special to now share John's birthday with him and to see them both in such great health just a few months later, and to celebrate the Suberts' (a term of endearment coined by Mario) wedding!

Read all about it in an upcoming entry...
