Summary: We had a long tiring flight, then spent ages queuing but we finally got there. Hired huge car and got to Vegas. Went for a 4h walk to see the sights (and tackiness) and finally got to sleep. For more detail in English see below the paragraph in Czech. Pics are at the bottom.

Woohooo...and we're off! Our 11 hour flight from Frankfurt was fine although neither of us slept. Flying over the Nevada desert it was really hard to imagine how a city like Vegas was ever conceived in the middle of it- never mind how it continues to thrive.

When we got off the plane we had to queue for ages at immigration (a girl from our flight fainted in the queue), then queue at customs, then queue to get the shuttle to the car hire centre and then queue for the Alamo desk there. When we finally got served we got some weirdo who throughout the tedious process of car hire paperwork kept saying 'right on!' and punching the air with his fist which we found really bizarre!

We got our car for the week which was a lovely big SUV (make 'Dodge', model ‘Journey’ – how appropriate!!!) and we got on the road for the short drive to our accommodation along the famous Strip. We have to say we definitely got a thrill cruising up Las Vegas Boulevard! We quickly dropped off bags and just got time for an evening walk along the Strip and back as we were leaving Vegas the next morning. I suppose it was partly tiredness but neither of us really enjoyed Vegas- it just wasn't our scene at all. Yes the hotels were great and the ostentatiousness and flamboyance has to be seen to be believed but in general we just found everything to be seriously tacky and plastic looking. Bearing in mind that by the time we got to bed that night we'd only had about 3 hours sleep in the previous 57 hours (and on top of a hectic few weeks) so we admit we weren't seeing it at our best and all we really needed was somewhere quiet with no people or bright lights for a while! We did enjoy the music and water show in front of the Bellagio and I got time to gamble a whole $13 (unlucky for some) in the Bellagio casino. Looks like we won't be affording to extend our trip then after all…

Next morning we got up early and drove to Walmart in Vegas to buy a tent and sleeping bag and some food for our camping in Yosemite. In the camping section we watched a guy buying his 18 year old son his first gun which was a real culture shock when in the same supermarket we were I.D.ed when buying a bottle of wine! It was interesting to see the outskirts of the city where the residents live. To us it was just a gridlike repeating row by row of the same scene of residential streets interspersed by shopping areas over and over and over to the edge of the desert.

Anyhow, we started our road trip then finally and J drove from Vegas to the edge of the Mojave desert where M took over.
