As our trip unfolds we will gradually aspire more to the above philosophy but as we leave our flat in Prague in the dark, cold and early hours of 25th September 2012 we certainly have some definite plans laid down and are very much intent on arriving.
Neither of us have written a blog before but we've been reading plenty of other really useful travel blogs in preparation for this trip. The problem is that some of you will be interested in more detail while most will probably just want the headlines so we’ll do a short summary before each entry and since a picture speaks a thousand words we’ll post a selection of Martin’s snaps too.
We've been fairly busy getting ends tied up over the past month and particularly in the past week finishing work, saying farewells to friends and loved ones, selling my car and getting packed. We've had loads of questions about how we'll pack for almost 6 months on the move across a range of different climates. We thought we'd it all worked out until we started packing so in the few hours before our taxi came we were still playing tetris with our gear. With all finally sorted and feeling relieved that we could actually lift our backpacks we managed to get about 2 hours sleep before the taxi came. With a mix of surrealism, excitement, exhaustion, anticipation and hope (for ourselves and the safety of those we leave behind) we closed our flat door to life as we've known it and headed to the airport for flight 1 of 23...Prague to Frankfurt, followed swiftly by Frankfurt to Las Vegas.
And so as the bleak European winter steadily creeps in I'll finish with the words on take-off of my kind and compassionate husband..."So long suckers!!!"
