One of the most uncomfortable and hot nights sleep (or non sleep) we have ever had. The children slept well, but the adults found sleeping in a confined space above the cab horrible, as the aircon doesn't reach us too well. Emma has decided that sleeping on the floor under the aircon unit tonight would be preferable so we'll see how that goes.

We caught the earliest shuttle bus to downtown Las Vegas, then worked out how to get to Las Vegas Blvd (The Strip) on one of the city buses. The one direct from where we are staying doesn't leaved until 10.10, and since we've been up since 6.15am we are keen to get cracking.

We have no real plan of action, just to try and get a feel of the place, and see as much as we can. We see the following hotel/casinos:

Caesars Palace: this place is immense and really cool. It's a Greco- Roman Fantasyland with marble statues, fountains and even the lifeguards dressed as gods and goddesses. The pool here is amazing. We sneak in to have a peek and take a couple of snaps. Dylan's favourite here is the curved escalator and the fountain where we taught him to make a wish before throwing his money in the fountain.

Flamingo: described as quintessential Vintage Vegas. We're not too keen on this place it's pretty dreary and lifeless, with row after row of people playing the slot machines. We do like the Wildlife Habitat here with flamingoes, ducks, terrapins, and pelicans.

The Quad: similar to Flamingo, so we just pass through.

The Venetian: we love this one It has full scale replicas of famous Venice landmarks, a canal with gondola rides, and hand-painted ceiling frescos. The travelator takes you up and over the Rialto bridge. Great shops, and some really nice photographic art galleries. There is one of Peter Lik's, who's photos of Australia we have up at home. Emma gets accosted by a beauty sales person, and had products galore squirted and dabbed on her. She escaped with some free moisturiser samples.

Fashion Show: massive shopping mall which we spent most of nap time enjoying the aircon and the shops in. Emma replaced her well used Superdry flip flops with some new ones. We have a snack and an ice cream in the food court here.

Harrahs: this is where we pick up our shuttle bus from and it's not too exciting.

The walk between places is stifling; this is beyond hot and sunny. We chuckle about how burnt we would be had we not been away in the sunshine for quite a while now.

The children attract a lot of attention during the day. There are not many little people around on the strip and they are quite a novelty. We can totally see why this is not a place for children, but we didn't want to pass up the opportunity to see it as we were passing right by it. Dylan is most annoyed that he's not allowed to play the adult games nor loiter watching them. Emma try's to explain the concept of gambling to him, but largely fails. We leave it at, when he is an adult he can decide if he would like to spend his money playing these games, but he might lose it all and have nothing left. Taya has a lovely new yellow dress on today and the crowds approve. She makes many new friends whom she loves smiling and waving to. People are also fascinated with the pram with the children stacked. We think its more common to have a side by side in the US. Rich wearing the baby Bjorn also gets lots of comments. A couple of other people clearly think we are hopeless. One lady comes to our table whilst Emma is feeding Taya to let us know that she is worried that Dylan is all by himself and that we should know his whereabouts. He is literally a metre from us playing. We are unsure how to respond! Another guy stops us to tell us to be careful not to knock Dylan's head which has flopped out of the pram whilst he's asleep. Clearly we hadn't noticed that!! Strange people.

So we can't quite decide what we think of the place. We are more like observers with the kids rather than actually really experiencing it. There is so much to see and the people watching is top class. There is a real mix of people- young and old, chavvy and classy, but we notice that on the whole people look a bits miserable. Now clearly this might be because we are seeing them hungover/ still drunk from the night before. It's definitely interesting, and we both think that the night time experience in the casinos, restaurants and bars would be amazing.

Rich ventures out this evening while the three little ones sleep. TGI Fridays for a small snack and then onto a live band in the bar. They mainly play country music, but they are good and the locals soon spot a tourist in the crowd sat at the bar. Rich is welcomed by the locals who come Friday/Saturday nights and treat this as their local pub.

Lots more to see tomorrow.
