What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday...with friends on a local (and moderately strenuous) hike.  A few weeks ago a group of us ascended a local mountain and summited the peak of Ben Lomond.  The hike starts at an elevation of 1,049 feet and ends with the summit at 5,734 feet.  Similar to the elevation gain traveled when completing one of Colorado's 14ers only we could actually breathe given the elevation difference.

The best part about this hike was the trail left from town in the forests near the Gondola.  After hiking through the beech trees for about an hour, the track broke out onto scrub and tussock, with views of Ben Lomond above. The track eases up the spur to the saddle beneath Ben Lomond.  From here it climbs quickly, then zig zags, steepens and bends right around the back of the peak before spiraling to the summit.  It's here at this moment when I realize and exclaim 'I can't believe this!! Look at this 360 degree view of where we live!!'  It doesn't get much better than pushing your way to the top of a mountain with a bunch of friends and celebrating by sharing a huge bar of chocolate with berry infused liquid oozing out.  Not to mention all while taking in the views of the Wakatipu region below.

I mean really...I can't put in to words how amazing this place is!
