We set sail from Harwich after a rather adventurous journey down. We left Glasgow on Tuesday morning, first to find the main road to England the M74 shut due to a major accident. We had to take a detour which added about half an hour to our trip. We had just passed Penrith on the M6 when we heard a noise from underneath the car, Jen drove straight to the hard shoulder where we discovered that the middle of exhaust had fallen off. We had to be rescued, but while we waited some highway patrols came and kept us safe. We did eventually make it to Cambridge, three hours later than planned.

After two nights with Molly and Ed we made our way to the sea. We saw our ship, the MV Discovery, straight away when we drove into the port. Everything went very smoothly at check in, where we kept a look out in vain for some younger people! Our first impression of the ship was very good, everyone was very friendly and helpful and we were pleasantly surprised with the size of our cabin and our three port holes. We were greeted straight away by our cabin steward Rudy, who has been very kind to us every since. We were all called up to do a safety briefing where we all tried to get our life jackets on the right way round.

Our first evening at sea was spent waiting for dinner, as they mistakenly put us on the later sitting. We were on a table to ourselves which wasn't ideal either and by the time we had finished eating the two of us were ready for bed!

The first morning we got up for breakfast and enjoyed the array of food on offer! Incidentally food is a big priority here, it's never long until the next helping, breakfast 8-10, lunch 12-2, afternoon tea 4-5, early dinner at 6 and even late night snacks at 11!! It's a good job we managed breakfast as we weren't able to eat again til dinner. Our first day was at sea travelling up the east coast of England and it was rather choppy. We were pretty shattered too which didn't help so we spent the whole day in bed sleeping. We ventured up for lunch but just the smell made us feel ill so we went back to the cabin again. It turns out that that was a particularly bad day at sea and even seasoned cruisers were ill. So that made us feel better! At least we felt ok lying down so if it's bad again we know what to do now!!

When it came to dinner it had settled down again so we managed to eat and got to know our new table companions. Seating is fixed on the ship so we sit next to the same people every night. Luckily the people on our table are lovely and quite chatty.
