Steinbeck finally reaches New York, but hits a snag. He is not allowed to go through the Holland tunnel to get home, because he has butane on Rocinate. A police officer stops him and tells him he will have to either take the George Washington Bridge home or take a ferry. He gets on the ferry and it lets him off downtown. After getting lost in the city, Steinbeck pulls over and begins to laugh hysterically. He confesses to a cop that he has been all over the country in Rocinate, and now he is back in his own town and is lost. The cop tells Steinbeck "Think nothing of it; I got lost in Brooklyn only Saturday." The cop then directs Steinbeck home and his trip is ultimately over.
