On the way to Mississippi, Steinbeck meets a man while having a hamburger. They begin to chat and the man asks where Steinback is going. Steinbeck tells the man he plans to drive toward Jackson and Montgomery. The man immediately begs for a ride. On their drive they start to talk about the Cheerleaders. The man is totally in agreement with what the Cheerleaders are doing. After getting into an argument over their racial believes, Steinbeck kicks the man out of Rocinate. Between Jackson and Montgomery, Steinbeck picks up one last person, a young black student. They talk about life and discuss what is going on with racial tensions in America.
