In New Orleans, Steinbeck parks Rocinate in a parking lot on the edge of town, so he can take a taxi to see the Cheerleaders at a nearby school. The Cheerleaders are a group of woman, who hated black people and didn't want white children to have to go to school with the black children. After seeing the Cheerleaders yell at the innocent people, Steinbeck is disgusted. He buys a poor-boy sandwich and leaves town. Along the way, he stops to rest and eat his sandwich. Not long after, he invites a man into Rocinate for coffee. They discuss the conflicts involving racism and what is going on with the Cheerleaders. Steinbeck continues his journey and offers a ride to a black man, who eventually feels uncomfortable and asks to be dropped off. He then stops at a motel for the night and cannot sleep.
