Wow, what a fantastic two days...well, it started with a rough night in the Hotel Turistico, frought with mosquito swarms in our not-so-cool, temperature or otherwise, rooms (the walkers couldnt even sleep, and had ants as well as mossi´s)...thankfully, sweet nate got up in the middle of the night to light a mosquito coil and get them away...wished we had nets. We got up super early...430 am...to catch a 520 bus to Mangaratiba and then a ferry to the Ilha, arriving about 10:30 am. There were a swarm of Posada owners at the dock when we arrived, and we took a few up on their offer. It paid off to be in a group of 4, cause we got to see several places and figure out what the standard rates and standard accomodations were...we sprung for $5 bucks more to get private rooms with dvd...since the evening life in this town was pretty much non-existent, which was fine with us...

that day, we took a short 1 1/2 hr hike through the jungle and along the beach. Then, we borrowed and rented kayaks to play around in the Bay...we learned a lesson. When you first think of turning back on an out-and-back paddle, go ahead and turn around...that point may not look much further, but the current gets stronger, and though all of the Duke in you says you gotta make it, the way home might not be too fun...you´re on vacation, remember? No...Im making it sound terrible, and it wasnt that bad, but we were definitely tired when we got back to shore. The afternoon adn evening sun were gorgeous from the water, and we could use the workout...all in all, a great deal. We showered up and headed to a cheap dinner, and then met a GREAT entrepreneur...the dessert cart...yep, you´ve got it...in the middle of the cobblestone street that lines the beachfront was a guy with all kinds of pastries and cakes, just waiting for us (and everyone else) to finish our dinner. FANTASTIC and homemade! Tired, we hit the hay pretty early.

Today, we got up what we thought was early enough, but had a FULL and fantastic breakfast at the posada...pound cake, fresh juices, teas, tons of fruits...it was stellar. we caught a 1030 ferry to Lopes Mendes, the prettiest beach on the island. WE lounged and swam and body surfed the afternoon away...after a 30 minute hike back to the boat, we rode back through the setting sun...phenomenal. cant wait to post pics.

We grabbed our stuff, made the 530 ferry back to Mangaratiba. We got there, and found a guy willing to taxi us back to Rio. He dropped us off at an expensive but decent hotel in Copacabana. WE just relaxed, and determined to find a cheaper and better hostel tomorrow night.
