Had an scenic drive thru Old Alexandria out to Mount Vernon, George and Martha Washington's home. This is a beautiful place. The house sits on a hilltop with the Potamac River in the backyard. there is a back porch with rocking chairs......no doubt where I would spend all my time. )) The house probably is as close to authentic as any restoration I have seen.
George Washington died in this house and he and Martha are buried there along with thirty five members of their family
There are ten bedrooms, a slave quarter for the visiting slaves (never heard of this before), three floors, original flooring, visitors dining room, family dining room, laundry room, smokehouse, carriage house, stable.....to name a few.
Go to mountvernon.org/vote and vote so maybe Mount Vernon will get a grant to finish the restoration on the dining room.
Back in DC, almost two hours at the Smithsonian, a visit to Ford Theater to learn about President Lincoln's assassination....to a souvenir shop for T-shirts, photo op at the White House. The White House looked rather plain from the street. Very pretty....very white.
On to Pizzeria Uno at Union Station for a buffet. One more monument on our way out of town...Iwa Jima which was really awesome. We said goodbye to our guide, Lorna, who was fabulous. It seems she has a tour company in northern Italy. Ummmmm.
We arrived safely in Williamsburg before 10:45 pm. We were met by our new tour guide and security guard. Once again, 108 tired feet fell off the bus and into bed. 7 00 am wake up call in the morning.
Tomorrow we start at 9 00 am. Night night.
