We've said goodbye to Egypt and arrived in Aqaba, Jordan. We said goodbye to 5 of our Austrailian companions as 4 of us hooked up with another tour group going to Jordan. Now we're traveling with 15 folks, again mainly Austrailian & New Zealanders. After leaving Mt. Sinai, we traveled to Nuweiba to catch the ferry. Various information that we got said the ferry left at 12:30, or 1:30, or 3:00. So we waited around for awhile before the ferry actually left at 3:45. It was unusually packed with Muslims who are making the hajj, or pilgrammage, to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, traveling via Jordan. On the Red Sea, we can see 4 countries simultaneously -- Israel, Egypt, Jordan, & Saudi Arabia. Wow.
When we arrived at Aqaba port, it was just about sunset, so guess what? Everything stopped for 30 minutes while people ate, just sitting around on the dock after disembarking the ferry. What we've seen in Jordan so far is a marked contrast to Egypt -- very Western, with clean streets and traffic that actually obeys lane markings and stoplights! Although, crosswalks still don't seem to mean anything.
Today we're off to the desert area made famous by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) who helped the British drive off the Turks in 1916. Then to Petra, the famous city carved directly into the stone, featured prominently in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
