Hello once again from Cairo. After 5 days of seeing ancient temples and historic sights along the famous Nile river, we've returned to Cairo with its frenetic bustle. We spent some time in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, which sells everything from tourist junk (have you seen a snow-globe in the shape of a pyramid?) to whole pigs, spices, clothes, and everything in between. Several times, we were nearly knocked upside the head by people carrying baskets of bread on their heads weaving their way through the narrow streets.
Since it is Ramadan, Muslims fast from food and water from sunrise to sunset. So, once the sun sets, the call to prayer sounds from all minarets in the city (and some of them have very LOUD speakers) and everyone literally has "breakfast". We see groups of people just sitting in their shops or in middle of the sidewalk, eating.
