Not only was today the day that we left Wal-Mart, it was also, finally, after months of build-up, the day of the 2008 Presidential Election. Whilst having breakfast & packing up we had been listening to the radio reports of long queues at the polling stations all across the States and so we were quite excited & eager to get on the road so that we might see some of it for ourselves.
However, from Fishkill in New York State, all the way down to East Brunswick in New Jersey, we didn’t see a single queue, not even a tiny one. We even stopped off in one town to use the internet at the library to book ourselves a motel room, and the library was the polling station, but still there was so little activity that if you didn’t see the sign, you wouldn’t even know that it was a polling station.
And so we arrived at our motel early afternoon & were soon settled in our room, lounging on the big bed, in the warmth, watching TV and using the free internet. Luxury!
Once the polls had closed we watched the election coverage, from the time when it was too close to call, to when Obama stormed ahead, to when he was proclaimed the President Elect, until finally some time after midnight he delivered his victory speech to a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people in Chicago and to millions around the world. What an amazing experience. We’ve lived through the last six months of the process and it’s been absolutely fascinating. It’s actually quite hard to believe that it’s all over now.
