Where I stayed
Jenny Jump State Forest, Hope, New Jersey
If ever you should find yourself staying in a Wal-Mart car park overnight, ensure you are parked nowhere near a staff entrance! They were in and out all through the night (or so it seemed) and that combined with the bright lights overhead made for a very poor night's sleep. It did however, mean that we were up and about early and shopped up for the next few days. It was another grey and foggy morning, but this one showed no signs of brightening up. Kingston Wal-Mart sits in an elevated position with great views of the Catskill Mountains from the car park. Or at least the views were good yesterday afternoon; today you couldn’t see very far at all.
We were on the road for about 10am and it took us around four hours to reach Jenny Jump State Forest in New Jersey. We passed through some lovely scenery, the roads becoming much more interesting once we crossed into New Jersey with twists, turns and slight hills. We also drove through the township of Montague, which proudly announces itself as “The Top Of New Jersey”, as it lies near the highest point in New Jersey which is a mere 1803 ft. We had showers of rain on the way and it was very, very cold; and not long after our arrival at the campsite it rained very heavily. Luckily it eased off for long enough that we could make a dash for the showers, which were lovely and hot and warmed us up again. And then it rained and rained and rained……..
