As our objective for today was just to get to Albuquerque and parked up in Wal-Mart's car park for the night, we had a leisurely morning packing up. From the camp site we headed down into Santa Rosa and to the launderette as we had accumulated quite a lot of dirty washing. With all five loads playing away, Mel uploaded some more blog and replied to a couple of emails while Neil studied his VW manuals to learn how to remove wiper motors. That's one of the things that we're going back to Albuquerque for. The one that's fitted to our bus is from an earlier model and doesn't make the wipers "return" which is a real pain in the "ass" (or is that just from having a roof canvas stuck up it?!-all will be explained one day!)

While we were at the launderette, the grey clouds that had been building, began to deliver their load. Quite a cloudburst. With the washing done we hit the I-40 and headed west, stopping off firstly at a rest area to have our lunch, and then a few more miles further on for a Dairy Queen. It was quite overcast for most of the way, which was quite a welcome relief from the heat. As we arrived in Albuquerque, the sun was out but there were big puddles all around, so they had obviously had some rain there as well.

After doing our shopping in Wal-Mart, we had our dinner and were just getting settled in for the evening, this time in the main lot out the front, so as not to have the heavy traffic noise from the Interstate, when a huge articulated truck pulled up. The driver got out of his cab with his sleeping bag and pillow and went into the back of his wagon leaving the big air-conditioning units on the trailer running. After about 20 minutes it became clear that they weren't going to be turned off anytime soon. Neil decided to go over and ask if they would be running all night. To which the guy replied "Yeah, I need to keep my animals alive". It transpired that his animals were rats, mice and birds which he was due to deliver to the Pet Smart store in the morning. And he was sleeping in the back with them! Thank goodness it was Neil that went across and not Mel! And so we decided that the noise of the freeway was preferable to that of the truck's air-con units and went around to the back lot again.
