We had set an early alarm to get ourselves on the road before it got too hot, but as neither of us had slept very well we didn't really need it. Mel remembers lying awake in the night praying for a breeze, and then when the HOT breeze came, praying for a cool one! When we got up this morning at 6am it was already 34'C! Mel washed her hair with the water out of our water canister and it was HOT after only being outside for five minutes!

Our route took us lower still into the valley, stopping briefly at "Devil's Golf Course", (an immense area of rock salt eroded by wind and rain into jagged spires, so incredibly serrated that "only the devil could play golf on such rough links"), before reaching the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere - Badwater Basin, at 282 ft below sea level. By now it was 9.25 am and already 40'C!

Not able to contemplate still being in DV in the middle of the day, we hot-footed it (excuse the pun!) out of the valley, up more tortuous hills and into a little town called Shoshone where we stopped off for a hearty American breakfast. After a brief tour of the local museum we hit the road again, heading north east into Nevada, through Pahrump and then roughly east through the Spring Mountains (more hills) before arriving in Las Vegas mid afternoon.

After finding ourselves a motel, we collapsed for a couple of hours while the air-conditioning cooled us down before hitting "The Strip" early evening for our first taste of Vegas.
