We pass plowed fields and billboards with military notices. When the sun passes temporarily behind a cloud it is breezy, even a bit chilly. Green banana trees, gray pavement with blotchy brown and black potholes, houses painted cheerily
pink and white and blue and yellow and any colour imaginable, tanned, brown people wearing clothes of all colours standing by the road, sitting on porches, trotting on emaciated horses, zooming by on dirtbikes, putt-putting past in cars, pedaling with us on their own bikes. Smells of old exhaust and horse manure permeate the air, which is warm and almost rich. Dogs bark and nip at bike tires, goats bleat and horses snort. Various music plays from radio speakers as we pass open doors of rickety houses. In the towns we are like comic relief for the people in the streets. They see us and smile and laugh, so I smile and laugh back! We fly on our blue and silver 24-speed bikes and dad and I are two happy tourists, enjoying the moment.
