Today we drove in to the interior of the Park. This place is beautiful, desolate, and amazing. It has rugged terrain with rocky mountains, deserts, and mesas. Driving through the Park we crossed numerous dry washes which carry huge amounts of water at some times of the year. Most have flood gauges which are marked up to 5 feet! One of the roads we took to Boquillas (a town on the Mexican side, but also the name of the area along the Rio Grande). The residents of Boquillas cross the river here and attempt to sell crafts to the tourists. We were warned not to purchase anything from them or to encourage them to cross the river as they could be arrested. We did see several collections of crafts sitting on the US side of the river with signs stating the price for items, in hopes that someone would purchase them. We encountered one Mexican on the US side and I actually got to use some of my high school Spanish replying to his greeting. The Park is too big to see in one day so we will come back another day.
