Where I stayed
Golden Palm Tree Sea Villas
Left the rainforest and after much negotiation decided to take a taxi to Sepang at the cost of 400 R. This was supposed to be a 4 hour trip but 5.5 hours later we arrived. The taxi driver was an ex park warden and told us much about the country and about the state of affairs in Malaysia. It was an interesting drive seeing much of Malaysia and having it described. (Did you know that the rubber trees all came from an original 7 trees brought over by the British..
I particularly liked the story about the factory boss whose dog went missing. They searched for hours but eventually it was found out that a Vietnamese family had eaten it and buried the collar so it would not be found!!! Their excuse was that they are allowed to eat cats and dogs in Vietnam!!
Now for a few days of luxury in the Golden Palm Tree Water Villas and 3 days at the Malaysian Grand Prix
Met 2 guys Andy and Hans who are part of the FIA and do the scrutineering for the race. Really interesting to talk to them. Andy knew Adrian Sutill who was sitting in the bar drinking Coke just behind us.
Day 2. Arrived in the afternoon in time to see the local boys with fast toys tear round the track in some sort of Malaysian touring car / sports car championship qualifier. Interesting as at the start we had a enormous shunt which meant that the rest followed the safety car for half the race. .They did have a Fiat 500 racing as well and it didn't come last!!!
F1 Practice was interesting and it is hard to describe the noise as it is so loud you can't think. Followed by the Qualifying session which was great to watch as the cars got quicker and quicker. Vettel first, Hamilton second.
Back to the hotel in the evening for a few drinks and met an American couple ( Mary and Russ) and agreed to share taxi to the track the following day.
The 3rd and final day arrives. Can't wait for the big race., Hope for Rain half way through. Just thinking about that whilst hanging out some clothes to dry on the balcony when Lewis Hamilton drives past in a buggy on his way to the race.( He was going slowly!!)
The race itself was great to watch and we could see about 70% of the track so saw most of the few incidents. ( No Rain and actually very hot). Vettel won , Button Second and Hamilton 7th after going to wide on the corner right in front of us.
Great experience, going back to Thailand now for some beach time in Ko Lanta..
