Celebrating Mark's Birthday and our 3rd Anniversary - our first big trip with the new car trailer and  having a car with us. We stayed right on the Klamath River and saw water birds and seals on the river. We drove up to the Smith River Redwoods and it was very chilly in among the trees. I found several types of mushrooms and lichens among the giant trees - lots of lichen hanging down. We also visited the Tolowa Dunes where I was finally able to find a lot of the north coast lichens and photograph them in their natural habitats. This is one of most pristine areas of the California coast, consisting of large freshwater lagoons and many other wetland areas. Many of the lichens grow here due to the lack of air pollution in other places.

Hwy 1 climbs up above the ocean and the last 2 days we were above the fog that was hanging on the ocean - it was like being in an airplane above the clouds. Our heaters kept us nice a toasty and cooked scones in our convection oven - yum!

We saw elk right along the side of the road, sat on the beach and generally had a great experience due to exceptional weather. We ate in Crescent City. Coming home we were treated to a lot of fall cover along Hwy 299 with the black oaks and cottonwoods putting on a showy display.
