Wiang Kum Kam (the ancient or forgotton city) There is a tour you can do which involves getting here via a short river cruise, then, by horse and cart, seeing the most interesting 6 (out of a possible 10) ancient sites in this once capital city.
Not sure how much the tour would have cost but i've been in Thailand long enough now to know it's both a lot cheaper and a lot more fun, to do this kind of thing off your own steam. So i came here on the motorbike and just followed the signs to each of the 10 sites. Some where just ground zero ruins, while others where still erected structures, some still as they were in ancient times, a few with new temples built around the old.
You can book a horse and cart ride for 200B (4pounds) from 2 of the 10 sites. Each site also has an information plaque in thai and english explaining the history of the relevant structure or site in ancient times. A very good day out.
