The old town in depth

Got up at 0620 today, quietly working on the computer until Arjan's alarm went off at 0700. The web and diary finalized from last night and then 0800 brekkie. The dastardly French had done a commando raid on most items. The 3 in 1 coffee mix will be given a miss tomorrow morning as will the somewhat greasy omelet though the bread was nice. The Aussie boys joined in, Gavin seeking an omelet with mushrooms [no dice]. Ian and Jill next in before I headed back to upload the blog.

Arjan to some degree finds my computer time annoying but that's the way I travel now. He had some difficulty with the idea I was taking into town my electric personality.

Off at 0911. The Armonia is in port, full of Eye Ties. It took until just after 0940 to reach the entry fee area for the fortress as Gate B 6 E. Most of the climb was thankfully in the shade but it was still sweatsville. Pop and water vendors were present but doing no business. Some 'boat people' were climbing [those under 70 or so?]. Arjan and I were probably up top around 10 bells, the Aussie boys passing us en route.

The views heading up were probably better for the old town; at the top, for overall vistas. There are but walls and ruins on the journey save for a church. The Armonia was moored just near the western gate so had to crop it from pix. Spent some time up there to chill, fewer and fewer people going up and the sun rose further. into the sky.

Heading down, ran into Nathalie going solo and then Ian and Jill. The descent was largely cool. Took the powder magazine descent route but saw no vestige of same. To the Caffe and Kuzina Scorpio for a well deserved cappuccino. The Aussie boys were meandering around, Gavin off for a[n unnecessary] haircut while John was trying to figure out what to do with a few extra days he has, the Dutchman assisting to a degree.

Arjan wanted to stay in town so I returned. We will rendezvous at the west gate at 1500. He doesn't want to go to the seafood restaurant tonight but I am undecided. Back for a shower and did the relatively short diary for today and downloaded the pix. The balance of the afternoon will be spent in the old town, taking pictures galore.

Heading back at 1407, the Costa Classica was in the greater harbour area. Ian and Jill had got some supplies for a late lunch. The Discovery is actually moored at the moment. Got an English version of the Kotor city map so that will help with names. Had an ice cream cone on entering the old city 2 E. It may very well be lunch.

Standing around by the gate, Nathalie came over and invited me to sit with her. Arjan strolled by with his own ice cream cone minutes later. He will come to dinner tonight. The 'Clock Tower' was the start of my photographic afternoon. Who should I run into but Rachel, heading for her rendezvous with Nathalie: verbal but mordant.

The Franciscan monastery of St Clara was the first religious place entered. It was small but had a nice altar.

St Nicholas Church is the largest church in the northern end of the old town. Its altar was rather dark in colours. The church is rather large by local standards.

St Mary's Church was small. It was a fairly simple church. Most of its frescoes had faded with time.
St Luke's Church is cute, for lack of a better word, situated on an angle in a small square. I did not enter its interior.

A good deal of time was spent looking for angle for pictures. Balconies and shutters were constant themes.

There was a steady stream of people about, especially in larger squares, but the old town was not crowded. Some 'boat people' looked to be at death's door. Most outside patios had patrons having a beer or a coffee, perhaps a glass of wine.

The old town is certainly not on a grid pattern so it was a question of 'wander here, wander there'. Sometimes others gave you the inspiration for a photo; at other times, I took on that role. It was a bit cloudy so some pictures may not have the 'edge' of a blue sky.

Found St Tryphon's Basilica 2 E. It was worthwhile for the understated light hues in the main part of the church, quite apart from the collection of items upstairs and the balcony view of the square in front of the church.

I headed back around 1630, seeing Ian and Jill heading back into town. Dunno where Arjan was but the room was open so I was able to download the afternoon's pix and update the diary. He suddenly came out of the washroom, seemingly missing my inquiry if he was in there, after 45M taking a bath!

Most of the blog uplifted save photos. Readied and off to dinner, the Aussie boys there already. Bozo Ben twisted his ankle walking solo, the dumb bastard. Nice yapping over dinner, the topic switching around to top three songs to take to a desert island.

The conversation at our end then turned to karaoke. In due course a list was obtained as to who should sing what in Dubrovnik if such a bar exists. Many won't participate [like Arjan, Rachel and Nathalie], some would need to be really drunk [Ian and Jill] and some you wish wouldn't be there [Bozo Ben]. It was decided the song for Bozo Ben should be either Ben or YMCA. A few F bombs came from Ben, the rest of the Aussies chastising him.

It's 0730 departure in a private van tomorrow for Dubrovnik so that should be okay for the 2.5H trip. Uploaded the blog pix, packed and bed by 2330.
